Fears

Fears are emotions of varying intensity aroused by a recognized and logical threat, and involve the fight or flight response.  They
arouse a feeling of unpleasant tension, a strong impulse to escape, and physiological changes, such as changes in breathing.

When someone has a fear, they usually know the primary cause, and often know when the fear started.  Most fears start at an early
age, as children are naturally highly suggestible.  Over time, fears which began in childhood are usually outgrown as the individual's
power of reasoning develops.  However, some individuals do carry fears over into adulthood, or develop adult fears.

Phobias

Phobias can be defined as fears that are uncontrollable, excessive, unrealistic and/or illogical, and are elicited by an object, situation,
or activity.  Phobias usually involve strong physiological and emotional responses.

When someone has a phobia, they may not know how or when it started.  Phobias commonly develop in adulthood, although they can
begin at an earlier age.
