Pain Management

Chronic vs Acute Pain
Pain is the number 1 cause of disability in America, and is estimated to cost Americans upwards of $120 billion
each year. Acute pain can be defined as pain that comes on suddenly - it may be mild and last just a moment, or
it may be severe and last weeks or months. Typically, acute pain does not last longer than 6 months, and it goes
away when the underlying cause has healed.
When acute pain does not heal, it can lead to chronic pain. Chronic pain is pain that persists for 6 months or more,
and does not usually respond to conventional medical treatment. Over 50 million Americans are partially or fully
disabled by chronic pain. The most common types of chronic pain are back pain, headache pain, and joint pain.
The emotional effects of chronic pain include anger, anxiety, depression, frustration, and isolation.
How to manage pain
Hypnosis, which was approved for medical use by the American Medical Association in 1958, is becoming increasingly popular as an
adjunct to pain medication. Managing pain through hypnosis allows us to tap into the subconscious mind, where we can dramatically
alter the perception of pain and even help the body heal itself.
