The most common cause of being overweight or obese is overeating.  It is estimated
that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions, so dealing with emotions appropriately is
important.  From an early age, many of us learn to suppress or repress our emotions
and feelings with food.  For example, it is common for a parent to cheer up a crying child
with a cookie or ice cream.  The child learns from this that it is not okay to feel sad, and
that eating will make them feel better.  This same type of behavior is reinforced over the
years into adulthood, not just with sadness, but with other feelings like boredom, anger,
frustration, and loneliness.  As a result, the adult has never learned a satisfying way to
deal with feelings.
